Protected Designation of Origin (PDO)

Since 2007 olive growers can produce olive oil with a protected designation of origin. In order to produce the Extra Virgin Olive Oil of Slovenian Istria (EDOOSI PDO) they have to fulfil all of the prescribed conditions.

The main conditions for PDO are:

  •  the cultivation and processing have to take place in Slovenian Istria
  • there must be at least 30% of the Istrian belica variety
  • fruits can be stored for a maximum of 48 hours
  • olive groves must adhere to the rules for integrated or organic olive production
  • cold pressing must be carried out at a temperature no higher than 27°C
  • state-of-the-art processing technology – only at registered oil mills
  • quality parameters valid for “top quality olive oils” around the world
ECO certification

The conditions to obtain the ECO certification are:

  • the product has to be produced without the use of  GMOs (genetically modified organisms)
  • the product must not be exposed to ionizing radiation
  • the product has to contain at least 95% of ingredients of organic origin
  • its processing must be subject to control
  • is has to be accompanied by documents in accordance with the regulations

The official logo of the European Union for organic food is a guarantee for the origin and the quality of the food. Since July 2010, this logo is mandatory for all pre-packaged organic food products within the European Union. Additionally, the logo can optionally be used by non pre-packaged organic food products produced within the EU, or for all organic products imported from third countries.
